MUŅIZ SCHOOL OF FILIPINO WARRIOR ARTS / MUŅIZ ARNIS
started in 2002 in response to a fellow health care workers desire to learn Self Defense
to feel more self confidence during her travels in Europe and during nighttime shifts at the Hospital. I informed her that I wasnt teaching and referred her to a Chinese Martial Arts School whose instructor is very adept at teaching Self Defense. She said she didnt want to learn from anyone, except me. Also, being good friends with Master Beto Briseno, I was sometimes asked to do a demonstration of Filipino Martial Arts, after which I would have people ask me to teach them Filipino Martial Arts. I would always refer them to one of the other Filipino Martial Arts teachers here in El Paso. One of the Students from Master Briseno's Tien Shan Si (Sky-Mountain Temple) insisted, pleaded and humbly asked me time and time again to teach him. I told this Korean gentleman, a Specialist in the U.S. Army and a 2nd degree Blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do, that he did not need any help from me! But, I am thankful neither one of these two people gave up on me and their petitions were granted when I finally gave in to their demands. I initially did not want to teach because I didnt want to make my former Instructor, Grandmaster Gaudiosa Ruby of the COMJUKA - Kali Systems USA, angry at me and accuse me of teaching her system of Filipino Martial Arts. I also did not want to have just another Filipino Martial Arts school , since there are at least four other schools in El Paso. So, what could I do? Well, I had already been continuing my training in California with Master Ner Reodica, Jr. and I had already attended seminars on different Filipino Martial Arts and I decided that I would begin to Teach. First, I was told so many times by so many different "Martial Arts Teachers" that if you want to make money teaching the "Martial Arts" you must teach CHILDREN, so I decided that because of the Aggressive and Violent nature of the Art, no Children will be taught. Second, my school would be more of a Club. I make a good living as a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant, so my students would be asked to perform other duties in lieu of monthly dues or memberships. And, they are REQUIRED to attend and financially support all seminars that the school sponsors, so that we can have the benefit of some of the finest Filipino Martial Arts teachers come share their knowledge. Within my first couple of months Punong Guro Steven Dowd of Arnis Balite came thru El Paso and taught my students that evening. November 2003 Master Ner Reodica, Jr. came and did a seminar for my students. And in between the times when these and other Masters and Teachers of the Filipino Warrior Arts give us their knowledge, I humbly instruct my students with the little that I know of the Warrior Arts of the Philippines. And so the training in the MANDIRIGMAs [Warriors] Path continues as long as my loving and compassionate God gives me breath. Mabuhay ang Pamaraang Panlaban ng Pilipino! Mabuhay Muņiz School of Filipino Warrior Arts! Long Live Muņiz Arnis!

Donald Muņiz, Jr.
was born in San Francisco, California to Donaciano Muņiz and Maria Cales de Muņiz on June 14th, 1955. My father always played some kind of
Jiu-Jitsu throws and wrist locks on me from the time I was just a
youngster. I didn't know at that time that my Dad had learned a little
Street Self Defense and some Street Knife Fighting on the backstreets of
Ponce, Puerto Rico in the late 1930's / early 1940's. I remember my Dad
having a red and blue POLICE JIU-JITSU paperback from which he would
torture and put a little pain on his chubby youngest son. It really was
through him where I developed a love for the Martial Arts.
At twelve years old I took a real beating from the neighborhood bully.
For a few months my neighbor Albert would win our neighborhood fights, then for
the next couple of months I would win a couple of fights. It was never
really anything serious. But Albert's older cousin Freddy was a bona
fide Juvenile Delinquent. He held my Head against a Concrete Wall and
punched me in the eye as hard as he could. He left my eye Green, Black, Blue with a little blood in the White of my eye.
My Dad said, "OK, it's time for you to learn how to defend yourself."
Then, instead of teaching me himself, he picked up the local Telephone
Book and found a little Karate School not too far from home. So in 1968
my Dad enrolled me into Castro's Kempo Karate off Bayshore Avenue in San
Francisco. I loved the art but wasn't too much into the exercises, so I
took off in the direction of looking for something easier. I studied
Shorin Ryu in the Bayview District at the Commmunity Center on Third
Street in a program run by the Black Panthers. I also studied a little
Gung Fu and Aikido. All these arts took more of self discipline and
physical energy than I wanted to expend, so I never became committed to
any martial arts discipline.
After High School I became very involved in
my Bible Group. I was considered a Jesus Freak in the early '70's but I
saw myself as just a Really Groovy Christian. I became a Lay Minister
and traveled to Puerto Rico, New Jersey, Southern California, Arkansas,
Illinois, New Mexico, Texas, Ohio, Kansas, West Virginia and then back
to Texas where for the last few years I have been blessed to call Texas
my home.
Now, time travel with me to 1992. I have been working in El Paso, Texas
at Vista Hills Medical Center as a Licensed Physical Therapist Assistant
when I feel the need to meet my lifelong goal: To go back to the study
of the Martial Arts and maybe attain the rank of Blackbelt. So, I enroll
in a STREETFIGHTERS Seminar I saw offered in Soldier of Fortune(c)
Magazine, to be held in the Mountains of San Bernardino, California. At
this Seminar the Main Instructor, Sifu Paul Vunak said "This is Jeet Kune Do Concepts,
but this technique is Filipino Martial Arts, and this technique is
Filipino Martial and THIS technique is also Filipino Martial Arts..." so
I got the message. What I really wanted to study is the very effective
Martial Arts of the Philippines.

I remembered that that in Northeast El Paso I had seen a hand painted
sign that read "Filipino American School of Combat Arts: Karate - Kali - Arnis - Eskrima" so upon returning from my trip from California I went in search of the Filipino Martial Arts School. I began my studies with Grandmaster (Tuhon) Gaudiosa Ruby, the only female Grandmaster of Kali in the World.
Guro Don with the "real" Frank Dux of Kumite / Bloodsport Fame Guro Ted Lucaylucay, Guro Don, Grandmaster Gaudiosa Sarno Ruby, Guro Burton Richardson & Punong Guro Gary Ruby
After 4 years there were differences between my Grandmaster and myself. And although we parted ways amicably, I am no longer considered a "Guro" by her and do not teach any of her system to my current students. All Instructors in Comjuka Kali Systems USA are not to recognize me as or refer to me as "Guro".
I continued studying Filipino Martial Arts with Master Ner Reodica, Jr. in his family's system: Luisianan, Laguna Eskrima - Laban Tulisan Brotherhood and other wise Men of Character and Heart that share the Warrior Arts of the Philippines so that I can share with my students my love and knowledge of these Warrior Arts!"
